Before we disappoint you with our conclusions at the end, let us warn you now: our vision will not be numbers-focused — EY’s crystal ball for 2025 was temporarily out of order.¹ Nevertheless, we see the chemicals industry at the tipping point between a new future and a downgrading to a general purpose utility function for others. Classical thinking about the industry is maxed-out, and by now most of the players are trapped in a prisoner’s dilemma, preventing them from embracing new ways.
