Thousands of chemicals go into making an everincreasing myriad of products, demand for which continues to remain high despite various global challenges. Against this backdrop, chemical companies in fast-growing emerging markets like China have done particularly well in recent years. Looking ahead, however, conditions over the next decade are likely to become more challenging. Demand growth has slowed. And, with considerable capacity expansion over the last decade and to come, margins are already eroded. There are also numerous manufacturing complexities in this sector such volatile costs and prices, as well as products that can be made in different ways with various combinations of materials, across more than one plant at a given company, to achieve the same output.
