How are plastics recycled?

This year’s Earth Day is focused on mobilizing the world to end plastic pollution. Here, we examine plastics recycling, which plays a big part in these efforts, and the recycling process. View the full graphic on the C&EN site. While most of us recycle to at least some extent, as this graphic shows there’s still a long way to go; of all the plastics manufactured since 1950, only around 9% have been recycled. It’s clear that additional solutions are needed. This year’s Earth Day site has tips on how you can reduce your own plastic product use and contribute towards the efforts to end plastic pollution.
