Washington state begins chemicals in products law implementation process

Washington state’s Department of Ecology has begun the implementation process of what governor Jay Inslee dubbed the ‘nation’s strongest’ chemicals in products law and is engaging stakeholders on its progress. The governor signed Senate Bill 5135 – which will be known by its working name Safer Products for Washington – in May and the department has spent the intervening months drafting a list of products that the law will prioritise. This could include notification requirements, product ingredient disclosure or information regarding exposure and chemical hazard.  The department has announced it will update stakeholders on the law’s implementation via a 29 August webinar and a recently launched email list in advance of releasing a "tentative" list of potential products of concern in September. The finalised list of those products is due next summer.
