Sumitomo Corporation of Americas Announces its Participation in Japanese Hydrogen Forum; Aims to Develop Hydrogen Value Chain in the U.S.

Sumitomo Corporation of Americas, the largest subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation, one of the world's largest traders and investors of goods and services, announced today its participation in the Japanese Hydrogen Forum . The JH2F is comprised of a group of leading Japanese affiliated companies with hydrogen businesses in the U.S. that are intent on providing the latest information regarding technology and policy in hydrogen energy sectors, including state-of-art integrated hydrogen solutions to support the adoption from governments throughout the country.

Japan and the United States are well aligned on their sustainability goals, especially since President Biden and Prime Minister Suga declared their shared goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. Hydrogen is a carbon-free energy resource, has high energy density to generate electricity and is an affordable source of energy storage. It can also be converted into renewable natural gas through methanation technology as well as into basic material resources such as resin. Even more, hydrogen is expected to be one of the major resources to decarbonize all industrial sectors, including transportation, power generation, heavy industry, commerce, and residential. For these reasons, JH2F was established to support the decarbonization goals of the Federal, State and Municipal governments in the U.S. by identifying and developing hydrogen solutions.

JH2F is supported by the Japanese government and Japanese governmental organizations such as Japan External Trade Organization, New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation and Nippon Export and Investment Insurance. In order to materialize the collaboration on the U.S. side, JH2F will establish subcommittees in each sector, such as hydrogen production and supply, land transportation, port decarbonization, power generation and finance.

KIRCO Announces Completion of Wacker Chemical Corporation NCA Innovation Center and Regional Headquarters in Ann Arbor

KIRCO announced the development and construction completion of Wacker Chemical Corporation's new Innovation Center and Regional Headquarters in Ann Arbor. WACKER – a pioneer and global leader in chemical R&D and manufacturing – held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening last week, which was attended by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, along with several other state, county and township officials. Covering 18 acres at 4950 S. State Rd., the technology campus serves as the hub of leadership and innovation for WACKER's North and Central Americas (NCA) region. The center currently houses more than 200 team members, including the company's NCA senior leadership team, the region's leading chemists, IT and other technical experts, along with support functions. WACKER partnered with KIRCO as their developer and contractor, leading the journey through site selection, design, capitalization and construction. The 140,000 square-foot campus broke ground in late 2020, and despite commencing amid the COVID-19 pandemic, WACKER team members moved in 19 months later. The more than $50 million investment allows WACKER chemists, scientists and senior leadership, who previously worked out of separate Michigan locations, to collaborate and innovate in a single, dynamic environment. Nippon Shokubai Obtains ISCC PLUS for Superabsorbent Polymers Derived from Caustic Soda Produced from Renewable Energy

Nippon Shokubai Co., Ltd. working to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, announces that it has obtained ISCC PLUS certification from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification system (ISCC) (*1) for superabsorbent polymers (SAP) made by its subsidiary Nippon Shokubai Europe N.V. (hereinafter NSE) from caustic soda produced using electricity generated from renewable energy. SAP, commonly used in disposable diapers, is mainly made from acrylic acid produced from propylene and caustic soda. In May 2021, NSE received ISCC PLUS certification (mass balance method (*2)) from ISCC for the production of SAP utilizing acrylic acid produced from biomass-derived propylene. It has now obtained ISCC PLUS certification for sustainable SAP made from caustic soda produced using electricity generated from renewable energy. Combining these certifications will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions throughout the product life cycle. Furthermore, Nippon Shokubai will establish a system that can supply bio-based/sustainable SAP in response to customer demand. In addition to these ISCC PLUS-certified SAP, Nippon Shokubai is engaged in the research and development of sustainable SAP that contribute to mitigating environmental impact, such as biodegradable SAP and recycled SAP from used disposable diapers.
