NGOs slam Circular Plastics Alliance’s lack of hazardous chemical measures

NGOs have expressed alarm at the "complete omission" of measures to tackle the presence of toxic substances from the EU’s declaration on the Circular Plastics Alliance. The European Commission’s initiative, which comes out of the EU plastics strategy, aims to ensure that 10m tonnes of recycled plastics go back into products by 2025. Signed in Brussels on 20 September by stakeholders including SMEs, large corporations and national authorities, the declaration lays out a series of actions for industry. These include improving design of plastic products, integrating more recycled plastics and identifying the potential for more plastic treatment across the EU. It also recommends that signatories build an R&D agenda for circular plastics and establish a monitoring system to track all flows of plastic waste in the EU.
