NGOs question industry petition to amend FDA ortho-phthalates regulations

A group of NGOs has questioned an industry request for the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to revoke its authorisation of 26 ortho-phthalates for use in food contact applications. Last July, industry group the Flexible Vinyl Alliance petitioned the FDA to pull its approval for the substances because "their use has been permanently abandoned". Ortho-phthalates are a class of food additives used in food contact materials as plasticisers, binders, coating agents, defoamers, gasket closures and slimicide agents.
