NGO: PFASs, flame retardants to dominate US state chemical legislation
Chemical Watch | February 06, 2020
Nearly 30 states are set to consider more than 180 chemical management policies this year, ranging from restricting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in food packaging and firefighting foams to eliminating flame retardants from some consumer products, according to an analysis released yesterday by a US-based NGO. Just as Safer States predicted in 2019, state legislatures are anticipated to continue leading the charge when it comes to US chemical regulation in 2020. "States are at the forefront of creating community health protections from toxic threats like forever PFAS chemicals, and this year is no different," said Sarah Doll, the NGO’s national director. "The news about widespread PFAS contamination, chemicals in plastics and flame retardants in electronics have spurred legislators to take broader action for the sake of public and environmental health."
