How US companies are designing non-toxic products

Many companies and sectors are realising the importance of the circular economy concept – an economic system that aims to minimise waste, and recycle resources and materials.

But few are aware that chemicals of concern pose a significant risk to its success. In Europe, certain substances used in newly designed products and materials, as well as legacy chemicals regulated due to their hazardous properties, are a consideration in the strategy.

The European Commission is rolling out its circular economy package, launched in 2015, and the link between chemicals, products and waste legislation is an important aspect. Solving the issue is far from straightforward. Discussions are continuing on how to address this barrier to what some experts consider the key to preserving resources for future generations.

Japan and China are taking note. But it is progressive companies, realising the opportunities of a circular economy, that are taking the lead. Some are adopting design strategies that ensure products and materials are free from certain chemicals and ensure ease of recycling.
