Envi rebukes outgoing EU Commission’s record on chemical controls

Members of the European Parliament's new look environment committee (Envi) have launched a scathing attack on the outgoing Commission for its failure to effectively regulate endocrine disruptors and other hazardous chemicals. In a debate with Commission representatives on 4 September, MEPs also demanded answers on why the EU executive has not delivered a non-toxic environment strategy, promised under the 7th Environmental Action Programme. It comes just weeks before the new Commission takes the helm in November. Envi's new committee was elected in July following European Parliament elections. This was one of its first sittings since the Parliament's election in May. The exchange between DG Grow director Carlo Pettinelli, DG Environment director Kęstutis Sadauskas and Envi focused on the report of a fitness check of EU chemicals legislation excluding REACH.
