Albemarle Announces Global Price Increase for Catalyst Products

Albemarle Corporation, a leader in the global specialty chemicals industry, announced a price increase for Catalysts global business unit customers. These price increases are effective immediately, or as contracts allow.

Albemarle and its suppliers are continuing to see unprecedented increases worldwide in energy costs and for key raw materials that are critical to manufacturing our performance products.

Several factors are impacting an increase in the cost of energy and key raw materials, some of which may be temporary. Examples include the increased energy costs in Europe due to a winter shortage, the up-to-40% increase in the costs of industrial metals, and the acute tightness in chlor alkali markets. Albemarle continues to monitor the energy and commodities markets accordingly.

M. Holland’s 3D Printing Group Expands Portfolio of Braskem PE and PP Filament

M. M. Holland’s 3D Printing clients now have access to polyethylene and glass fiber reinforced polypropylene filaments. Both materials deliver high printability, reduced warpage and shrinkage, and better interlayer adhesion than other filament options in the 3D printing market. PE materials formulated for additive manufacturing applications have a track record of high warpage, degradation and failure. Braskem’s FL300PE filament is a low density, lightweight material providing excellent surface finish, low warpage and high dimensional stability. This material is ideal for packaging, consumer and industrial applications. “When 3D printing with PE materials, many of our clients have reported an array of technical difficulties including warping, inconsistent finishes and deficient technical properties. Braskem’s PE material provides an incredible level of thermal stability that makes the material consistent and significantly easier to print. Carbios, On, Patagonia, PUMA and Salomon Team up to Advance Circularity in the Textile Industry

Carbios a pioneer in the development of enzymatic solutions dedicated to the end-of-life of plastic and textile polymers, has signed an agreement with On, Patagonia, PUMA, and Salomon, to develop solutions that will enhance the recyclability and circularity of their products. An important element of the two-year deal will be to speed up the introduction of Carbios’ unique biorecycling technology, which constitutes a breakthrough for the textile industry. Carbios and the four companies will also research how products can be recycled, develop solutions to take-back worn polyester items, including sorting and dismantling technologies, and gather data on fiber-to-fiber recycling as well as circularity models. The challenge the four brands share, is that their ambitious sustainable development goals can only partially be met by conventional recycling technologies which mostly target bottle-to-fiber recycling. Future regulations will require more circularity in packaging and textile. Yet the market consensus is that there will soon be a shortage of PET bottles, as they will be used for circular production methods in the Food & Beverage Industry. Carbios’ innovative process constitutes a real technological breakthrough for the recycling of polyester fibers, which are widely used in apparel, footwear and sportswear, on their own or together with other fibers. PET polyester is the most important fiber for the textile industry with 52 MT produced, even surpassing cotton at 23MT1. The biorecycling process uses an enzyme capable of selectively extracting the polyester, recovering it to recreate a virgin fiber. This revolutionary technology makes it possible to recover the PET polyester present in all textile waste that cannot be recycled using traditional technologies. PET plastics and fibers are used to make everyday consumer goods such as bottles, packaging and textiles. Today, most PET is produced from fossil resources, then used and discarded according to a wasteful linear model. By creating a circular economy from used plastics and fibers, Carbios’ biorecycling technology offers a sustainable and more responsible solution. “This Consortium model has proved to be very efficient based on the success of the milestones previously achieved in packaging. AMG Lithium Signs Binding Multiyear Agreement to Supply Battery-grade Lithium Hydroxide with EcoPro

AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V. announces its wholly owned subsidiary, AMG Lithium GmbH of Frankfurt has signed a binding supply agreement with Korean company EcoPro for an initial three-year term. AMG Lithium will supply EcoPro with battery-grade lithium hydroxide from its plant in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany, which is recently under construction and scheduled to start commissioning in Q3 2023. Under the Agreement, AMG Lithium will deliver a minimum of 5,000 tonnes per annum of battery-grade lithium hydroxide to EcoPro BM’s cathode materials production plant in Debrecen, Hungary. The contract includes an option for additional volumes. Initial quantities for qualification purposes are scheduled to be delivered in late 2023 – with regular quantities to follow in 2024. AMG Lithium plans to produce an annual amount of 20,000 tpa of battery-grade lithium hydroxide in the first module in Bitterfeld-Wolfen with four additional modules planned to achieve a total annual production capacity of 100,000 tpa. “We are happy to have reached this Agreement to supply EcoPro’s European cathode materials plant out of our Bitterfeld refinery. Imperial advances renewable diesel plans, awards hydrogen contract to Air Products

Imperial announced a long-term contract with Air Products to supply low-carbon hydrogen for Imperial’s proposed renewable diesel complex at its Strathcona refinery near Edmonton, Alberta. Air Products will provide pipeline supply from its hydrogen plant under construction in Edmonton. “Our agreement with Air Products is an important milestone as we progress plans to build the largest renewable diesel manufacturing facility in Canada. This project highlights Imperial’s commitment to investing in a lower carbon future. We continue to progress discussions with our business partners and governments as we work toward a final investment decision in the months ahead.” Jon Wetmore, Imperial’s vice president of downstream Imperial will use Air Products’ low-carbon hydrogen to produce renewable diesel at Strathcona that substantially reduces greenhouse gas emissions relative to conventional production. The hydrogen and biofeedstock will be combined with a proprietary catalyst to produce premium low-carbon diesel fuel. Air Products is increasing overall investment in its Edmonton hydrogen facility to CAD $1.6 billion to support the Imperial contract. The additional investment by Air Products will be used to facilitate integration with Imperial’s proposed project that is expected to enable further significant emissions reductions at Air Products’ overall complex. Air Products will supply Strathcona with approximately 50 percent of the low-carbon hydrogen output from the 165 million standard cubic feet per day hydrogen production complex. “There is significant demand for low-carbon hydrogen, and as a first-mover, Air Products is ready to meet that demand from our Alberta Blue Hydrogen Hub,” said Dr. Samir J. Serhan, chief operating officer at Air Products. “Canada is rapidly implementing an energy transition that emphasizes the use of low-carbon hydrogen, and Air Products is demonstrating that world-scale hydrogen facilities can be net-zero for carbon emissions. We continue to set the stage for a competitive, low-carbon-intensity hydrogen network, which includes increasing liquid hydrogen production capacity at our site to 35 metric tonnes per day, to provide clean hydrogen for the growing industrial and mobility markets across Canada.” Imperial’s renewable diesel complex is expected to produce more than 1 billion litres per year of renewable diesel from locally sourced feedstocks. First announced in August 2021, the project is anticipated to realize about 3 million tonnes per year in emissions reductions in the Canadian transportation sector, which is estimated to be the equivalent to taking more than 650,000 vehicles off the road annually. The project is projected to create about 600 direct construction jobs, along with hundreds more through investments by business partners. Third-party studies have shown renewable diesel from various non-petroleum feedstocks can provide life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions reductions of approximately 40 to 80 percent as compared to petroleum-based diesel.
