Bring in the New or Déjà Vu ? Adventures in Chemical Engineering History Part II

To kick off the 2019 New Year, we’ll reflect on a few lessons, still relevant today, from technological progress in the past. Like us, our forbearers faced political, social, and economic challenges, and, like us, they looked to science for solutions. Along the way, they made amazing discoveries but they also hit brick walls. Then, as now, even the most amazing technological discoveries have a habit of requiring long residence times in developmental stages (often awaiting other discoveries) before they emerge as useful (often in surprising applications) which are now simply taken for granted.

Petrochemicals, Policy, and Public Health

Decades of policy decisions contributed to the shale gas boom and now the petrochemical industry is eyeing the Ohio River Valley region as a production hub for single-use plastics made out of fracked gas, starting with Shell’s massive new ethane cracker in Monaca, Pennsylvania.

Refinery-Petrochemical Integration

Advisian

Petrochemical plants and refineries both process hydrocarbon derived materials. Refineries focus on fuels production. Refinery products include LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), gasoline (petrol), kerosene and jet fuel, diesel, fuel oils, and coke. Petrochemicals focus on creating intermediates used to produce industrial and consumer products. Major petrochemical processes include steam cracking to produce ethylene (ethane), propylene (propene), and butadiene and aromatics plants producing benzene, toluene, xylene and other aromatics.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES

Stem Alliance

Jointly organised by STEM Alliance and Scientix, the webinar was held online on Thursday, 9 May 2019 at 18:00 CEST (Central European Summer Time) in English language. The purpose of this webinar was to give teachers, career counsellors, educational authorities and researchers an understanding of careers in the STEM field with the chemical and petrochemical industry. Our two speakers from company members of the European Petrochemical Association (EPCA), Ana Montenegro, Innovation & Improvement Manager at Repsol, and Daniel Zweifel, Technical Service and Development at Dow Europe GmbH, presented their experience related to this career path and talked about the opportunities existing in their sector.
