Washington state: 'Nation's strongest' chemicals in products policy becomes law

May 09, 2019 / chemicalwatch

Washington Governor Jay Inslee has signed into law a "precedent-setting" measure to regulate the use of chemicals in products, which its supporters say is the strongest such policy in the nation. The Pollution Prevention for Our Future Act (SB 5135) will require the state’s Department of Ecology to act on products containing high-concern chemicals, including PFASs, phthalates, flame retardants, phenolic compounds and PCBs.Regulatory actions the department may take to "increase transparency and reduce the use" of these substances include notification or ingredient disclosure requirements, as well as restrictions or prohibitions when feasible alternatives are available.
