IPE calls on chemical giants to improve supply chain safety in China

Beijing-based NGO, the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (IPE), has called on multinational chemical companies to take responsibility for improving safety and environmental performance in their supply chains. The move follows the explosion at the Jiangsu Tianjiayi Chemical Company (JTC) in China earlier this year. In its report, Outsourced responsibility? Response to fatal explosion by chemical giants, the NGO calls for companies to: tap into suppliers' safety and environmental records to identify the risks and closely track their compliance status and performance in China, addressing them from the baseline expectation of compliance with local laws and regulations; learn from leading brands in the textile and IT industries to identify priority sectors in the upstream supply chain and work with them to mitigate the risks; and recognise the demand within globalised manufacturing and sourcing to extend responsible care throughout the supply chain to tackle the key sources ...
