Johnson Matthey announces new hydrogen gigafactory to accelerate the transition to a decarbonised transport economy

Johnson Matthey | July 18, 2022

Johnson Matthey a global leader in sustainable technologies, announces that it is building a £80 million gigafactory at its existing site in Royston, UK, to scale up the manufacture of hydrogen fuel cell components. Earlier this year, JM announced a refreshed strategy, with an ambition to be the "market leader in performance components for fuel cells and electrolysers," targeting more than £200 million sales in Hydrogen Technologies by end of 2024/25. The gigafactory will initially be capable of manufacturing 3GW of proton exchange membrane fuel cell components annually for hydrogen vehicles and is supported by the UK Government through the Automotive Transformation Fund. The APC forecasts that the UK will need 14GW of fuel cell stack production and 400,000 high pressure carbon fibre3 tanks annually to meet local vehicle production demands by 2035 whilst the market expects that there could be as many as three million fuel cell electric vehicles on the road globally by 2030. The investment will safeguard highly skilled manufacturing jobs in the UK. The site is expected to be in operation by H1, 2024. The new facility at Royston will deploy state-of-the-art manufacturing processes to scale up production of fuel cell components and to meet customer demand. The site could be expanded in the future, almost tripling potential capacity by using the decommissioned Clean Air production facility, to produce both fuel cell and green hydrogen components. "Decarbonising freight transportation is critical to help societies and industries meet their ambitious net zero emission targets – fuel cells will be a crucial part of the energy transition. For more than two decades, JM has been at the forefront of fuel cell innovation. The fuel cell market has now reached a pivotal moment with the increasing urgency to decarbonise transportation and today marks the next step of the journey to a low-carbon future in the UK. We're delighted to be playing a key role in driving it forward." Liam Condon, Chief Executive of Johnson Matthey Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said: "This investment, backed by Government, is a major vote of confidence from Johnson Matthey in the UK. Their new facility will not only add to our growing electric vehicle supply chain, but it will also help secure hundreds of highly skilled jobs. "We are working hard to ensure the UK reaps the benefits of the green industrial revolution, and today's announcement reaffirms UK's reputation as one of the best locations in the world for high quality auto manufacturing." Ian Constance, Chief Executive of the APC, the organisation tasked by the automotive industry and government to accelerate development of green vehicle technology and responsible for managing ATF, said: "This is incredibly significant and puts the UK in an enviable position in the global fuel cell supply chain. Our insight forecasts that the UK could dominate European fuel cell production and be a centre of excellence globally and today's announcement is a huge step towards realising that ambition. "We already have 15% of the fuel cell value chain radiating from UK businesses but this could be as much as 65% just by expanding on current strengths in electrochemistry and coatings or using our automotive capability to volume manufacture components. Johnson Matthey, a world-leader in hydrogen technology, have seen this opportunity and I'm delighted they have chosen the UK to grow this capability." Road freight accounts for about 9% of global CO2 emissions, with 62% arising from medium and heavy-duty trucking - the hardest-to-abate transport segments. Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) provide similar benefits to existing technology such as fast refuelling and long range but emit zero kerbside CO2 or other pollutants, so they are a popular option for decarbonising heavy-duty commercial vehicles and are core to a net zero future.

Air Products and VPI Sign Joint Development Agreement for Large-scale, Low-carbon Hydrogen Production in Humber

Air Products; VPI | July 07, 2022

Air Products the world's largest hydrogen producer, and power generator VPI, are pleased to announce the signing of a joint development agreement to drive forward the "Humber Hydrogen Hub" or "H3", which seeks to develop a flagship 800MW low-carbon hydrogen production facility in Immingham, UK. The majority of hydrogen produced would be used to decarbonize VPI Immingham's existing power production. The agreement was signed by Air Products Chief Operating Officer Dr. Samir J. Serhan and VPI Chairman Russell Hardy. Proven Technology Supporting the Humber's Ambitions As the UK's largest industrial cluster, the Humber has the highest levels of industrial carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. H3 would produce low-carbon hydrogen at large scale, combining market-leading hydrogen production, carbon capture technology and offshore CO₂ storage currently under development for the Humber region. The majority of the low-carbon hydrogen would serve as a substitute fuel for VPI's existing third gas turbine power train. Additional low-carbon hydrogen would also be made available to other industrial users. Combined with deployment of post-combustion capture technology on trains 1 and 2 at VPI Immingham as part of the Humber Zero project, H3 would bring substantial decarbonization to the VPI combined heat and power facilities, saving over two-thirds of the emissions from its Immingham industrial site. The H3 project looks to capture up to two million tonnes of CO₂ per annum and contribute to achieving Net Zero in the wider Humber industrial region by 2040. Crucial Development Milestones The H3 project has submitted an application for "Strand 1" funding as part of the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund (NZHF). Administered by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the fund has the objective of enhancing hydrogen production at scale. It will contribute towards the UK Government's ambition of realizing 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production by 2030. As both companies move towards an investment decision, this marks a significant step that could bring hundreds of new jobs to the region during construction and operation. Air Products and VPI look forward to constructive engagement with the Government on how the H3 project can become a reality. Air Products' Chief Operating Officer Dr. Samir J. Serhan said: "We are excited to be working with VPI, a strong proponent for decarbonization in the Humber region. Having a partner who is committed to decarbonizing their existing power production operations through the use of low-carbon hydrogen provides the secure hydrogen offtake that makes this an excellent opportunity for us to support them and the UK Government's broader sustainability targets." "When Humber Zero was first developed over two years ago, a low-carbon hydrogen solution for VPI's third train was a critically important part of our mission to decarbonize Immingham. By partnering with Air Products on H3, we are harnessing the expertise of the world's largest producer of hydrogen―and the operator of one of the largest low-carbon hydrogen facilities in Port Arthur, Texas, USA―to ensure that we can make a substantial contribution to the decarbonization of the Humber region. We are confident that, when appropriate government policy develops with respect to support of low-carbon hydrogen, H3 would materially contribute to meeting the UK's Net Zero goals." VPI's Project Director Jonathan Briggs "VPI is investing heavily in the energy transition and supporting the creation of a hydrogen economy in the UK as part of the overall drive towards achieving net zero in the coming decades."
