Nippon Shokubai and Arkema: a Strategic Partnership to Mass-produce LiFSI Electrolyte Salts for a European Battery Supply Chain

Nippon Shokubai and Arkema | May 31, 2022

Nippon Shokubai and Arkema are joining forces to launch feasibility studies and establish a joint venture for the construction of an industrial plant for the production of LiFSI ultrapure electrolyte salts, a key component of battery cells for electric mobility. Ultrapure and high performance LiFSI electrolyte salts, a key component of car battery cells, will speed up the development of new electrolyte formulations for the next generations of batteries, including semi-solid and solid state batteries, by significantly increasing their power, stability, cycle life and recyclability, while reducing charging time in high or low temperature conditions. This industrial project will support the development of the European battery value chain and participate in the global need for carbon-neutral mobility. Combining Arkema’s fluorochemicals expertise and Nippon Shokubai’s unique know-how in the industrial-scale production of high-purity LiFSI, both partners have joined forces in a strategic partnership that has led to the development of an innovative and integrated process. Based on this cutting-edge patented technology, a LiFSI fluorinated pilot production line has been installed on the Pierre-Bénite site and successfully came on stream in 2021. To support the exponential growth in demand for battery cell materials, Arkema and Nippon Shokubai are taking a step forward by launching feasibility studies and establishing a joint venture to enable the mass-production of LiFSI electrolyte salts at Arkema’s Pierre-Bénite site in France by end-2025. About Nippon Shokubai Co., Ltd. Since 1941, Nippon Shokubai has grown up its business with unique catalyst technology. BKV CORPORATION AND ENLINK MIDSTREAM PARTNER ON CARBON SEQUESTRATION PROJECT IN THE BARNETT SHALE

BKV Corporation | June 10, 2022

BKV Corporation and EnLink Midstream, LLC announced that they have reached a Phase I Final Investment Decision and entered into a definitive agreement to develop a carbon capture and sequestration project in the Barnett Shale region of North Texas. "It is critical that companies in the industry work together to bring actionable change and move large-scale carbon reduction projects forward. This partnership brings us one step closer to the safe and profitable production of net-zero green natural gas." BKV Chief Executive Officer Chris Kalnin Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing and permanently storing carbon dioxide, which reduces the amount of pollutive carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Under their agreement, BKV will continue to produce natural gas containing carbon dioxide from its Barnett Shale area operations, and EnLink will transport this natural gas via its modified pipeline and facility infrastructure to the EnLink natural gas processing plant in Bridgeport, Texas. At the Bridgeport plant, the carbon dioxide waste stream will be captured, compressed, and then disposed of through permanent sequestration via BKV's nearby injection well. "EnLink values our partnership with BKV, and we are eager to build upon it through this sustainable CCS project," EnLink Chairman and CEO Barry E. Davis said. "The project will capture and store a significant amount of carbon dioxide emissions per year, which moves EnLink a step closer to achieving our goal of a 30 percent reduction in CO2-equivalent emissions intensity by 2030 over EnLink's 2020 scope 1 emissions intensity." As part of its sustainability efforts, BKV recently formed dCarbon Ventures, a dedicated business unit focused on driving CCS innovations and project development. Vice President of dCarbon Ventures, Lauren Read, said, "CCS is such an important component of driving climate solutions, and I'm really excited to have a project at the Phase I FID point. We plan to be injecting carbon dioxide by the end of 2023, at which point it is expected to be one of the first permanent commercial sequestration projects to come online in the United States." Read said that this initiative is anticipated to offset BKV's current emissions by approximately 10 percent, bringing the company even closer to its goal of reaching net-zero by 2025. Read continued, "We are doing this the BKV way—which means taking action to address our own emissions rather than achieving our goal through the purchase of offsets alone. Carbon sequestration is a fundamental element in our sustainability plans, and we expect dCarbon Ventures to be an area of significant growth for BKV." "This investment reinforces our commitment to leading the way in the production of net-zero green natural gas," Kalnin said. "We look forward to being a pioneer in CCS and working with EnLink, and other like-minded companies, who are ready to address climate change head-on." About BKV Corporation Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, BKV Corporation (BKV) is a privately held natural gas exploration and production company that seeks to deliver reliable, sustainable energy to the community. Founded in 2015, BKV has over 200 employees across the U.S. that are committed to building a different kind of energy company. PVS Chemicals and ESG to Improve Sustainability at Chicago Sulfuric Acid Plant

Energy Systems Group | August 03, 2022

PVS Chemicals, Inc. is partnering with Energy Systems Group, LLC a leading sustainable energy solutions provider and wholly owned subsidiary of CenterPoint Energy, Inc., to significantly improve sustainability at its sulfuric acid plant, located in Chicago, Illinois, by capturing waste steam to generate 2.6 MW of renewable electricity through a steam turbine generator in the new onsite Waste Heat to Power (WHP) Plant. The $14.2 million project, signed in June 2022, will create electricity from waste steam to generate renewable energy that is expected to cover approximately 95% of all plant electricity needs. The project should also eliminate over 12,700 tons of CO2 emissions per year, lessen utility interruptions from voltage trips, and reduce purchased water and chemical consumption. PVS delivers sustainable chemical product solutions for its suppliers and customers. This project provides a substantial, measurable improvement to the sustainability of the Chicago production facility through generation of electricity from waste steam, which displaces electricity currently produced via fossil fuels. As a result of completing the WHP project, nearly 95% of all electricity consumed at the site is expected to be from an eligible “renewable” resource as defined by State of Illinois legislation. This generated energy also ensures that reliable, high quality sulfuric acid production continues so the plant can consistently meet production targets and demand. Steam is generated as a result of the exothermic reaction utilized to produce sulfuric acid. Currently, a significant portion of this steam has no beneficial use. The WHP project will instead use the wasted steam to generate power. Using this steam to generate power onsite avoids the purchase of electricity from the grid, which has a high carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint. In total, PVS expects to reduce its carbon footprint related to electricity by more than 12,700 tons of CO2 per year or a 115% reduction against the current carbon footprint associated with electric power. This expected GHG reduction is equivalent to any of the following 1,452 home annual energy consumption 2,484 cars driving for one year 1,402,157,854 cell phone charges 529,292 mature trees in a forest (almost 30 times the carbon sequestration of Central Park, NYC which contains 18,000 trees) “This commitment in Chicago is a great example of our approach to business,” said Tim Nicholson, Chief Operating Officer of PVS. “The new installation will take thousands of tons of CO2 out of the air while simultaneously making the facility sustainable for the long term.” “ESG applauds PVS for their dedication and passion to a cleaner, more sustainable environment. We are truly honored to be a strategic business partner of PVS and provide them with a unique, creative approach to the development and construction of this environmentally beneficial project.” Jarrett Simon, Vice President of ESG, Public Sector and Sustainable Infrastructure About PVS Chemicals, Inc.
