ACC and its members support a modernized North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which will continue to facilitate expanded economic growth, job creation and enhanced North American competitiveness in the global marketplace. NAFTA has been instrumental to the growth and job creation of the U.S. chemical sector, tripling exports to the region since 1994, and nearly quadrupling them by 2025 to $59 billion, according to projections. A U.S. withdrawal from NAFTA and the subsequent tariff increases would disrupt more than two decades of regional economic integration by raising the price of goods. This will destroy demand for U.S. exports and force companies to cut jobs.

International consortium to advance decarbonisation of the aviation sector

Sasol | May 30, 2022

Sasol and Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin will lead a consortium to develop and optimise next-generation catalysts that will play a key role in decarbonising the aviation sector through sustainable aviation fuels. At a ceremony at Sasol's global headquarters in Johannesburg today, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz attended the launch of CARE-O-SENE research project, to be funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and Sasol. Sasol joins forces with five other world-leading organisations in Germany and South Africa to accelerate the development of catalysts that are essential to produce green kerosene on a commercial scale through Fischer-Tropsch technology. "We are delighted to have been selected to lead this important project. Our expertise in FT technology and catalysts makes us the ideal partner to help Germany and the world decarbonise the aviation sector and make it sustainable over the long-term." Fleetwood Grobler, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sasol Limited Prof. Dr. Bernd Rech, Scientific Managing Director of HZB adds, "CARE-O-SENE will enable us to accelerate innovation in a crucial field of green energy. This can only be achieved in a global partnership by deeply integrating fundamental research and technology development on an industry relevant scale." Other CARE-O-SENE project partners include the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the University of Cape Town, Department of Chemical Engineering and INERATEC GmbH. The consortium expresses its sincere gratitude to the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research for supporting these important efforts. CARE-O-SENE will run for three years and pursues the goal of setting the course for large-scale commercialisation of green kerosene production by 2025 with its research on catalysts. Catalysts are used to speed up chemical reactions, increase the yield and improve the quality of refined products. The new FT catalysts are expected to increase the fuel yield of the process to over 80 percent, thereby optimising use of resources. Unlike conventional kerosene derived from fossil feedstocks, SAF can be made from green hydrogen and sustainable carbon dioxide sources. Developing SAF is key to a sustainable decarbonisation of the hard-to-abate aviation industry, and the main lever for net zero aviation. The underlying technology to developing SAF at scale from green hydrogen and sustainable carbon sources is FT technology, in which Sasol has been a global leader for more than 70 years.

NW Natural to Partner with Modern Electron on Exciting Pilot Project to Turn Methane into Clean Hydrogen and Solid Carbon

NW Natura | July 28, 2022

NW Natural, a 163-year-old gas utility based in Portland, announced a partnership with Washington-based Modern Electron to create clean hydrogen directly from natural gas and blend it into its existing natural gas distribution network. The innovative technology process known as concurrent combustion methane pyrolysis is designed to produce clean hydrogen and solid carbon using only natural gas and air as inputs – and does not require any electricity, water, or consumable catalyst. “This technology could provide an incredibly elegant and flexible way of producing clean hydrogen – and potentially at a very low cost whenever and wherever we need it on our system to help decarbonize,” said Kim Heiting, Sr. Vice President of Operations for NW Natural. The technology, which is planned for pilot at NW Natural’s Central Portland facility, is one of many solutions the utility is pursuing in its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality for the energy it delivers to customers, as detailed in its Destination Zero report. Hydrogen created by this clean pyrolysis process has the potential to be used for heating in industrial, commercial, and residential applications. Solid carbon resulting from the process could be turned into products such as asphalt, construction materials, automobile tires and soil amendments. This project will be the first in a line of scheduled gas utility installations from Modern Electron, the suburban Seattle-based sustainable heat and power technology company. “The fastest and most economical way to reduce CO2 emissions at a national scale is to effectively leverage existing infrastructure. By decarbonizing natural gas at the point of use, our Modern Hydrogen products help businesses reduce their carbon footprints without the cost and complexity of changing their processes. We are all about decarbonization. And we are excited about our partnership with NW Natural,” Mothusi Pahl, Vice President of Business Development and Government Affairs About Modern Electron Modern Electron is a sustainable heat & hydrogen company. Modern Electron’s gas decarbonization products are designed to generate cost-effective hydrogen from natural gas at the point of use without CO2 emissions. This “Modern Hydrogen” approach eliminates the logistics, costs, and emissions associated with traditional hydrogen generation, transportation, and storage. Built for continuous hydrogen supply in process heat, power generation, and environmental/space/water heating, Modern Electron's proprietary Concurrent Combustion and Pyrolysis technology has the ability to accelerate decarbonization. North American gas utilities trust Modern Electron for cost-effective clean hydrogen in industrial, commercial, residential, and transit sectors. ROBOTIC MAINTENANCE IN THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY: EVONIK RELIES ON GETAC F110 TABLET TO CONTROL AUTONYMOUS ROBOT

Getac | June 28, 2022

Conducting maintenance and inspection tasks in critical areas using an autonomous robot - this task is being carried out by Evonik, a global leader in the specialty chemicals industry, as part of an Innovation Project with three partners at one of its company-owned chemical plants. Evonik relies on Getac's F110 ATEX-certified tablet to control the robot and teach it automated inspection routes around the facility. The company chose the F110-EX due to its powerful performance and excellent reliability, compared to other rugged computing alternatives. In addition, Getac's fast response and high degree of flexibility while integrating the solution were key factors in creating an optimal working environment for the Proof of Concept. The robot's software was provided by Energy Robotics, while the robot itself was supplied by Boston Dynamics. The aim of the project is to evaluate the practicality of an automated robotic maintenance and inspection solution in the chemical industry. The robot's primary task is to travel along pre-programmed inspection routes, collecting important operational data. It will also conduct automated safety inspections that cannot be integrated into a remote maintenance concept (or only at great expense). Organisations can then use data collected to improve the intervals between inspections while simultaneously increasing asset reliability. Getac's tablet plays a pivotal role in the project, serving as the main interface between robot, control software, and human operator. For control and monitoring in the plant, the operator can access the software via the F110-EX, while an additional controller is used for quick interventions during operation. "The robot receives its orders through the Getac F110-EX, which can also be used to control it during corresponding missions, such as in the tank farm," explains Thorsten Schimpf, process expert at Evonik. "The robot is equipped with sensors, as well as infrared and optical cameras, allowing it to navigate to specific locations within the facility and take photos of displays or record data, which can then be transmitted back for evaluation. For effective operation, we knew we needed a portable rugged device with enough power to display video feeds from the robot in real-time. The F110-EX allows us to do just that." The requirements for the F110-EX tablet are high. Not only must it be highly robust and ATEX-certified, but the screen must also be easy to read outdoors, under a wide range of environmental conditions including rain, and it must be fully functional in both hot and cold temperatures. Evonik also required a Windows operating system, as well as the ability to capture and process large amounts of data both quickly and effectively. Connectivity and performance play a key role as well, allowing for fast video transmission and play back. In addition, an LTE connection is required because there is no WLAN in the tank farm. Finally, Bluetooth is needed to connect the controller to the tablet. With the appropriate Getac carrying strap, the F110 can be carried comfortably in front of the body, so the user has both hands free to operate the controller at the same time. "Evonik not only recognised Getac as a good solution, but Getac responded immediately to our enquiry, was able to help quickly, and offered the right solution for our needs," adds Thorsten Schimpf, "The F110-EX is extremely reliable and fail-safe, it works flawlessly and meets our very high requirements for performance, functionality and connectivity." Schimpf emphasises: "We are very satisfied with the F110-EX". "The Getac F110-EX is based on state-of-the-art rugged technologies, making it ideally suited to Evonik's ambitious project. We are very pleased to be able to contribute to the project's success and look forward to working closely with Evonik on similar initiatives in the future."
