Schneider a premier multimodal provider of transportation, intermodal and logistics services is hosting its Transportation Sustainability Summit in Long Beach, California, this week where the company will unveil to customers the “Pledge to Plan”, a process to support shippers in preparing their transportation strategy to meet the sustainability goals defined by their organization.

Schneider’s Transportation Sustainability Summit is the first-of-its-kind event for shippers to hear from industry experts on the acceleration of sustainability across transportation, alongside discussion of key trends and solutions that are leading the charge, such as electrification. Customers at the summit will receive a closeup look at Freightliner’s eCascadia, the manufacturer’s electric Class 8 truck. Schneider is planning to add 62 eCascadias to its southern California intermodal operations in late 2022/early 2023.

NW Natura | July 28, 2022
NW Natural, a 163-year-old gas utility based in Portland, announced a partnership with Washington-based Modern Electron to create clean hydrogen directly from natural gas and blend it into its existing natural gas distribution network.
The innovative technology process known as concurrent combustion methane pyrolysis is designed to produce clean hydrogen and solid carbon using only natural gas and air as inputs – and does not require any electricity, water, or consumable catalyst. “This technology could provide an incredibly elegant and flexible way of producing clean hydrogen – and potentially at a very low cost whenever and wherever we need it on our system to help decarbonize,” said Kim Heiting, Sr. Vice President of Operations for NW Natural. The technology, which is planned for pilot at NW Natural’s Central Portland facility, is one of many solutions the utility is pursuing in its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality for the energy it delivers to customers, as detailed in its Destination Zero report.
Hydrogen created by this clean pyrolysis process has the potential to be used for heating in industrial, commercial, and residential applications. Solid carbon resulting from the process could be turned into products such as asphalt, construction materials, automobile tires and soil amendments.
This project will be the first in a line of scheduled gas utility installations from Modern Electron, the suburban Seattle-based sustainable heat and power technology company.

Sasol Chemical and LOTTE Chemical | June 20, 2022
Sasol Chemicals, a business unit of Sasol Ltd. and LOTTE Chemical have agreed to conduct a pre-feasibility study of a joint project to build, own and operate a plant to produce battery-grade electrolyte solvents, key components of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.
The companies will assess the suitability of Sasol’s locations near Lake Charles in the United States and Marl in Germany for a facility that could produce a variety of battery-grade electrolyte solvents, using feedstock provided by Sasol and third parties and employing proprietary technologies of both LOTTE and third-party licensors.

“This agreement is consistent with our strategy to answer the sustainability challenge through the solutions we provide our customers,” said Shelley Grahmann, Vice President of Strategy Development and Optimisation for Sasol Chemicals. “With an existing Sasol footprint and strong site infrastructure available in Marl, and the development of our Lake Charles site as a sustainability hub, we are eager to determine if either site would be ideally suited for a facility to provide key materials to the lithium-ion battery market.” The project will also consider options to minimize carbon footprint, such as the usage of renewable energy.
Electrolyte solvents enable lithium-ion batteries by allowing lithium ions to travel more easily between the battery’s anode and cathode. Lithium-ion batteries are likely to be the key power source for electric vehicles.
