Avient and Oceanworks Collaborate to Expand the Use of Recycled Ocean Plastics

Oceanworks, Avient | June 16, 2021

Avient Corporation, a leading provider of specialized and sustainable material solutions and services, has announced a partnership with Oceanworks to assist clients in incorporating recycled ocean plastics into their products. Recycled ocean and ocean-bound plastics are collected within 50 kilometers of a coastline from the ocean, waterways, and ocean-bound collection zones.

Avient and Oceanworks are now working on an extended recycled ocean plastics portfolio after the 2020 launch of reSound R recycled content thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) made with Oceanworks recycled plastics.

The resulting custom-formulated materials, including TPEs and thermoplastics, will be based on Oceanworks Guaranteed* base resins. Oceanworks will also provide source certification so that companies can confidently and transparently communicate the story of these materials and their impact.

The Alliance to End Plastic Waste introduced Avient and Oceanworks (AEPW). Avient joined AEPW as a founding member in 2019. Oceanworks was chosen in 2020 as a game-changing venture to be incubated under AEPW's Innovation program in collaboration with early-stage startup accelerator Plug and Play.

Avient's solutions, including recycled ocean plastics from Oceanworks, are available globally and can be used in a wide range of TPE and engineered thermoplastic formulations.

High-density crosslinked polyethylene, or XLPE, is a thermoset resin that is specifically designed for critical applications like chemical storage. During the XLPE manufacturing process, a catalyst (peroxide) is built into the resin, which creates a free radical. The free radical generates the crosslinking of the polymer chain, so the tank essentially becomes one giant molecule.
