CANADA, US GOVT CONSULT ON CHEMICALS OF MUTUAL CONCERN PRIORITIES
The US and Canadian governments have begun consulting on proposed priorities to address current and future threats to the countries' Great Lakes region. The Great Lakes Quality Agreement requires regular updates to these binational priorities for science and action; the current draft would apply from 2020 until 2022. The draft, which comes out of regularly held public forums, is open for public comments until 30 August. It includes an annex on chemicals of mutual concern (CMCs) that lists the following priorities for action: continuing to implement risk mitigation and management actions identified in the Great Lakes Binational Strategies for CMCs to facilitate reductions in releases of CMCs; compiling and making available Canadian and US environmental quality guidelines (including federal and provincial or state guidelines and other relevant criteria) for CMCs; identifying and assessing additional substances for consideration as CMCs; and tracking the implementation of binational strategies for CMCs.
