The government has just announced that it has put new guidance in place to help any businesses that use chemicals if the UK exits the EU without a deal in place. If, by the deadline for Brexit of March 29th, the UK does leave without a deal companies will need to register their chemicals on a new regulatory system – UK REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) – which has been set up to replace EU REACH.

Guyana-Suriname basin: Rise from obscurity to super potential

Article | May 13, 2021

Recent discoveries in the Guyana-Suriname basin attest to estimates of 10+ Bbbl of oil resources and more than 30 Tcf of gas.1 Like many oil & gas successes, this is a story that begins with early exploration success onshore, followed by a long period of exploration disappointment in coastal to shelf regions offshore, eventually culminating in deepwater success.

How Is the SCIP Database Different From the REACH Regulation

Article | February 14, 2020

Companies operating in the European Union (EU) must submit data when introducing articles containing Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) above the 0.1 percent weight by weight (w/w) threshold. The reporting trigger for an in-scope article is currently derived from the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation’s Candidate List of SVHCs, but the data requirements for the SCIP database, triggered by the EU Waste Framework Directive (WFD), vary widely from those required by the REACH Regulation.

Applications of Scratch Testing on Polymers

Article | March 5, 2020

Polymers have been used in many consumer and industrial areas for many years. They have several advantage compared to metals such as low density, chemical resistance and easy production. However, polymers have generally lower wear and scratch resistance than other materials and therefore these properties must be carefully controlled. Since the beginning of the 20th century polymers found their place in many applications in daily life and industry. Their production is relatively simple and they can be formed into many different shapes. The market of polymers is developing fast and new polymers appear very frequently.

Closing the loop: Real-time measurement of oil in water for process facilities

Article | May 10, 2021

When an oilfield’s reservoir pressure is depleted during primary recovery, additional oil can be recovered by recycling the produced water and injecting it back into the reservoir. Water management is critical for such water and water-alternating-gas (WAG) floods. In its Permian basin operations, Occidental recovers, recycles, and re-injects large volumes of water for its enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations. With real-time monitoring of oil in water (OiW) delivering reliable and continuous data, Occidental identified a way to optimize the recovery process and is working with NOV to expand the use of OiW monitoring equipment.
