Led by Western Europe, increasing regulations and bans against plastic bags and other single-use plastic items such as drinking straws is driving growing demand for biodegradable plastics. The current market value of biodegradable plastics exceeds $1.1 billion in 2018 but could reach $1.7 billion by 2023. Biodegradable or compostable polymers are bio-based or fossil-fuel-based polymers (plastics) that undergo microbial decomposition to carbon dioxide and water in industrial or municipal compost facilities. A few of these polymers decompose in backyard compost bins or in soil, freshwater or saltwater.

Digital Transformation. Accelerated Globalization. Innovation. Increased Focus on Sustainability. Aggressive New Business Models. Changing Regulations. These are just some of the ways the chemical industry is evolving in recent years. And if the chemical industry is changing, it’s no surprise the role information professionals play in the organization is changing as well. So how can information professionals shift their perspective to support the changing chemical industry landscape? Here are a few ideas: Know what kinds of content chemical researchers want – and have it readily available. Driving down operational costs and speeding up time to market are high priorities for chemical companies. What can information managers do to support these strategic initiatives.

What Are Fine Chemicals?

Article | March 27, 2020

The initial versions of drugs were produced by extracting substances from natural herbs and other plants. As understanding and technology in chemistry continued to grow, scientists figured out to isolate and extract a lot more individual compounds from raw materials. The complicated processes that produce these simple, pure substances form the field of fine chemistry. The chemical industry is separated into branches, with fine chemicals serving as the smallest segment of them. Its companions are commodities and specialty chemicals. Commodity chemicals are those that are mass-produced on a big scale to supply global markets. They include general compounds that are the same from supplier to supplier. Specialty chemicals usually are sold as brand name products and are advertised for their distinct qualities and their abilities to carry out functions that other chemicals cannot. They are composed of one or more fine chemicals.

Optimizing chemical production using data-driven, AI-enabled hybrid modeling

Article | March 13, 2020

Smart use of your plant’s data can take process efficiency to a higher level. Hybrid models driven by artificial intelligence deliver the best results for the least effort. And you don’t need a data science degree to enjoy them. Data is everywhere these days – and the volumes of it are growing exponentially all the time. We’re used to smart uses of it in our everyday lives. Like Amazon and Netflix using our past behavior to tempt us with new products or shows, even making them more appealing by tailoring how they look based on carefully constructed, data-driven profiles of our tastes. Much of that heavy lifting is done by artificial intelligence (AI). In chemical production, process control systems have been collecting data measurements during continuous or batch manufacturing for decades.

THE BENEFITS OF CHEMICAL FOAMERS, AND HOW BEST TO USE THEM TO MAXIMISE PRODUCTION

Article | April 14, 2020

Downhole fluid build-up coupled with a drop in reservoir pressure can lead to the rapid decline of gas production rates, and can ultimately result in a well ceasing production. While there are many ways to deliquify a well to maximise production, chemical foamers can be incredibly effective and well worth considering. In this blog post, Kevin Lonie shares some of the benefits of using chemical foamers, and provides insights and advice around how best to use them… “Foamers are a much cheaper option than alternative solutions, such as mechanical lifts, and there is very little risk associated with their usage. If a foamer doesn’t work, it won’t make the well worse - so often we see clients giving them a go before opting for more expensive methods, in the hope that they produce the desired results. And we have seen their success over and over again.”
