Chlorine is indispensable to maintaining crystal clear, sanitized swimming pool water. However, when reports emerged that swimmers and pool staff were being accidentally exposed to chlorine gas at pools, there was a need to help stop these incidents. One incident of a chlorine gas exposure involved an equipment malfunction at a swim school in California that resulted in 19 people suffering breathing difficulties. Unfortunate exposures like these happen at the rate of at least a dozen or so per year in the US.

Improving Pump Seal Reliability for Bay Area Petrochem Plants

Article | March 10, 2020

Keeping thousands of pumps in San Francisco Bay Area refineries running 24/7/365 requires a well-planned and well-executed maintenance strategy. Unplanned failures may have ramifications for safety, budget, and compliance—especially with regard to Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) regulations. One of the most mission-critical elements for smooth operations is pump seal reliability. Many plants run pumps outside the safe operating envelope and replace them only when economically feasible. Over time, however, you increasingly risk catastrophic downtime. Fortunately, you have the means to largely mitigate pump seal reliability problems with awareness and proactive management of conditions to improve safety and compliance.

The Benefits of Understanding Safety Data Sheets for the Industrial Hygienist

Article | February 13, 2020

As an industrial hygienist, you spend a lot of your time making data-driven decisions. Closing the loop: Real-time measurement of oil in water for process facilities

Article | May 10, 2021

When an oilfield’s reservoir pressure is depleted during primary recovery, additional oil can be recovered by recycling the produced water and injecting it back into the reservoir. Water management is critical for such water and water-alternating-gas (WAG) floods. In its Permian basin operations, Occidental recovers, recycles, and re-injects large volumes of water for its enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations. With real-time monitoring of oil in water (OiW) delivering reliable and continuous data, Occidental identified a way to optimize the recovery process and is working with NOV to expand the use of OiW monitoring equipment.

The Trump EPA’s “Working Approach” to new chemical reviews is only working for the chemical industry

Article | February 23, 2020

The Trump EPA has worked very hard to render this long-awaited update of its approach to reviewing new chemicals under TSCA an empty exercise. Despite Administrator Wheeler’s promises in January 2019 to the contrary: EPA has still failed to provide any legal or scientific justification for its Working Approach. EPA provided no actual response to the many detailed comments it received on its 2017 framework, instead issuing a 1.5-page document that dismisses many of the comments merely as having “stemmed from a misunderstanding of the Agency’s intent.”
