A timeline of the discoveries of the chemical elements

As it’s the International Year of the Periodic Table, I decided to revisit this old timeline of element discoveries I put together five years ago. The old version was a little in need of visual improvement, as well as updating to include the element discoveries confirmed since 2014. The timeline highlights the countries in which all of the 118 elements were discovered. In some cases this differs from the nationality of the person who discovered it; e.g. Marie Curie was Polish, but discovered polonium while working in France. Where an element was discovered concurrently in more than one country, both countries’ flags are shown.

Article | April 6, 2020

The U.S. chemical industry has a vital role to play in response to COVID-19. Following President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency, one of the first steps the American Chemistry Council took on behalf of its members was to secure federal designation of the U.S. chemical industry and its workers as “essential critical infrastructure.” This means that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified the chemical industry and its employees as an industry sector critical to public health and safety, as well as economic and national security.

Chemical Accidents Lead To Increase In Investigations

Article | February 17, 2020

In the last two years, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) has launched investigations into seven separate chemical accidents or explosions in the Houston area. Prior to 2018, the CSB only conducted roughly one investigation per year. Investigators believe that the massive increase in accidents which require an investigation by the CSB is due to a variety of factors such as the large number of chemical companies in the Houston area, the age of the infrastructure, and companies being allowed to self-regulate. Many of these explosions and fires have directly led to the deaths of workers, bystanders, millions of dollars in property damage, and the evacuation of tens of thousands of local residents who risk being exposed to toxic chemicals.

Boom in petrochemicals demand guaranteed but we must grow sustainably

Article | June 3, 2021

ONE OF THE GREATEST achievements of the last 30 years has been the fall in the number of people living in extreme poverty. In 1999, 1.9bn of the world’s population were living on less than $1.90, the Word Bank’s definition of extreme poverty. Despite setbacks caused by the pandemic, this had fallen to 698m by October 2020. Income levels alone are not enough to escape the life-threatening agony of extreme poverty. There is no point in having money if the essential goods and services to spend your money on are not available. Critical to poverty alleviation has been sufficient supply of all the things that people in the rich world take for granted. The raw materials to make the vast majority of manufactured goods include petrochemicals and polymers. Nearly all the major manufacturing chains would not have been able to function without petrochemicals. Think of medical equipment, syringes, blood bags, hospital gowns, face masks, pill bottles and medicine blister packs. None of the above could have been produced without petrochemicals. As people emerged out of extreme poverty and as economies became wealthier, modern-day medical services became more widely available.

What are Fine Chemicals & Why you should Outsource its Production

Article | March 25, 2020

Fine chemicals are those which are produced with a very high standard of purity and are intended for use in specialized applications. If you are starting a new company or investing into the development phase of a new product, outsourcing the production really makes good sense. This safeguards you and your business from the financial losses suffered out of halting the production of a product unevenly. A single substance created with the assistance of chemical reactions, which is additionally integrated into highly evolved applications is called a fine chemical. In contrast to bulk chemicals that are produced in large quantities, fine chemicals are produced in small batches because of their specialized nature. They are mainly used as starting materials for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals & biopharmaceuticals.
